Democrat Woes Print E-mail

Amid the race for what could be his fourth term in the House, Frost filed a motion to seal the divorce records of an Austin lobbyist and her ex-husband late last month, a case for which the East Texas Democrat was deposed in February during the proceedings. On Friday in the Travis County Courthouse, 98th District Court Judge Rhonda Hurley sealed those records, meaning everything filed in the case will now be hidden from the public.

The lobbyist and her ex-husband previously signed an “Agreed Confidentiality Order,” which made Frost’s deposition and all related items confidential. However, portions of Frost’s deposition were read and recorded in open court during the trial.  Frost contends other people not related to the case were “attempting to obtain” a copy of the court reporter’s record of what was said in trial.

HALL JOINS HOUSE TEA PARTY CAUCUS

WASHINGTON, DC . . .  Rep. Ralph Hall (R-TX/4) announced today his membership in the newly formed Tea Party Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives.  The caucus recently organized to bring attention to the concerns of Americans who are calling for fiscal responsibility, adherence to the Constitution and limited government.

“I support the principles of the Tea Party movement and appreciate the efforts of these dedicated Americans to restore the basic principles on which our nation was founded,” Hall said.  “I am pleased that several Tea Party groups have formed in my congressional district, and I applaud the work they are doing to promote good conservative policies.”

“The purpose of the Tea Party Caucus is to listen to the Tea Party groups, to help give them a voice in Washington, and to help promote the values and priorities that they hold dear,” Hall said.

The caucus currently has more than 40 Members.  Congressman Hall is the most senior member, now serving his 15th term in the House.  The caucus chair is Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota.

Texans for Lawsuit Reform Print E-mail

Todd Morgan, a speaker from TLR will be in Atlanta speaking to a joint meeting of the Bowie County and Cass County Patriots.  The meeting will be held at the Silver Spur on Hwy 59 in Atlanta beginning at 6pm.

What Texans for Lawsuit Reform Strives For, And Why

morganTLR’s objective is to restore litigation to its traditional and appropriate role in our society. A lawsuit takes a heavy emotional and financial toll on participants, and therefore should be the remedy of last resort to resolve disputes between parties. A lawsuit should not be used to win lottery-type riches for a lawyer and his client.

TLR has been working for more than a decade to create a civil justice system that discourages non-meritorious lawsuits or outrageous claims for damages. We seek to encourage quick and efficient dispute resolution. We want injured parties to be made whole by the party causing the injury at the earliest possible time. We envision a litigation system purged of intimidation, allowing plaintiffs to be fairly compensated and defendants to get a fair day in court. TLR strives for a trial environment in which the outcome is based solely on the merits of each party’s case.

To meet our goals, TLR is active in political campaigns (through the TLR Political Action Committee), in legislative advocacy, in public relations, in judicial selection, and in the development of case law.

TLR will continue to be fully engaged in legislative elections and in legislative advocacy to both preserve the tremendous gains that have been achieved and to enact additional much-needed reforms. The Texas Legislature enacted comprehensive tort reform in its 2003 session, building on reforms that had been passed in previous sessions, especially in 1995. The cumulative reforms of the past four legislative sessions will go a long way to building a fair, balanced and sensible civil justice system. Elements of the trial bar will tenaciously try to reverse these legislative gains. Opponents of tort reform will redouble their efforts to defeat pro-reform candidates at the polls.

Support of TLR is an investment in the future of our law, our economy and our society. We hope you will join us in pursuing our mission of providing a fair, balanced and predictable framework in which civil disputes can be resolved efficiently and justly.
